The STEM field is still highly dominated by white men. Even though there are more and more pre-college programs getting women and minorities into STEM, we still aren’t seeing growth in higher education STEM fields with minorities.
-
One of the reasons being others perception and our own of where women and minorities, especially minority women should be. In order to move forward and see the change we desire we must encourage those women and minorities in their major choice, even if society has told us that traditionally they should pick an easier major.

Getting students into STEM education is incredibly important right now. We need to have a lot of STEM educated people in order to stay on top economically and technologically.
-
However, in many areas throughout the United States there is a shortage of teachers, especially those who teach STEM education. In fact, schools say that the hardest position to fill is their math departments.
-
This is a problem that needs to be fixed, but it can only be fixed by a community effort. If communities can build more programs around STEM education and incentivize higher STEM education, we may be able to bring back growth in STEM education.

What can you do to support STEM education in your community?

There are many misconceptions behind STEM, one of the biggest being that some kids are STEM kids, and some are not.
-
If we can implement STEM education at a young age and build a solid foundation, we would see more successful results.
-
STEM at a young age is essentially easier than higher education STEM. At a young age, STEM education is a lot of hands-on projects that don’t feel like work at all, but so much is gained from them.

What is your favorite hands-on STEM activity?

-
What we don’t see a lot of are programs that are helping those with special needs succeed in the STEM field.

As technology grows and changes people are always looking for new ways to make more education more captivating, fun and effective. The way of the future for education is robotics, according to a lot of people.
-
Researchers are now conducting research using children and robots to see if there are any improvements in a classroom setting. These robots are made to keep record of the children’s reactions and progress in their work and encourage them with unlimited patience to keep working.
-
While robots sound like a good idea, and maybe even a replacement for teachers, they are not. The robots are not capable of many things, like open-ended conversations and keeping attention of the student of long periods of time.
-
There are also some privacy concerns regarding the robots and the amount of information it gains from the children. Although there are many things to work out with the robots, they have proven to be fun educational additions to a classroom.
-
How do you feel about placing robots in a classroom as an educational supplement?
