Older model Autoprops are still serviceable. This weekend I repaired an H5 ball bearing Autoprop that was over 20 years old. The owners looked after the anode so the propeller was in great shape. It was hard to get the hub off so the cleanup and rebuild were done at the yard. This style of propeller has loose ball bearings - small ones at that. With a bit of pre-planning and a good bucket, the job went smoothly!

If you have an older Autoprop, we can service and rebuild it for you! Give us a call today on (757) 962-9219

BoatTechTV Episode 12 - Open Water Propeller Tests

In episode 12 of BoatTechTV we look at Open Water Propeller Tests! This is the primary method to determine the performance of a new propeller design which can be performed in a towing tank or a cavitation tunnel. The test is normally non-dimensionalised and then used in conjunction with a resistance test for a hull to design a propeller. This is a quick overview of a complex set of tests and also the last episode in the series! More to follow soon...!

BoatTechTV Episode 10 - Marine Fouling

In this episode we explain the different types of marine fouling that can occur on a sail boat hull and a sailboat propeller. The traditional methods to treat the problem of marine fouling are discussed and the new methods that are environmentally friendly are introduced. The increase in drag on a sailboat is also discussed which can be as much as 40% for sailboat covered in barnacles! This adds to the fuel consumption and also to the emissions of NOx and Sox in the environment. Both of these adverse evicts can be overcome by painting; this is the subject of the next video in the series.

BoatTechTV Episode 9 - Anodes

https://youtu.be/_GWCDIk0ASI
In this episode of BoatTechTV we look at sailboat propeller anodes. This often overlooked part of a propeller is so important in keeping the propeller corrosion free. If the anodes are not used the propeller will deteriorate into an irreversible state which for bronze propellers can result in the zinc being removed from the propeller and it becoming brittle. King Propulsion is the US agent for Bruntons Propellers and supplies a great range of sailboat propellers. https://kingpropulsion.com

Hull Speed Simplified

In episode 6 of BoatTechTV we pause for a moment and revisit the previous episode to simplify the description of hull speed. The episode explains where the term comes from and how it is used in the real world to determine the suggested maximum speed of a particular hull design. Hull Speed is very useful for sizing an engine and propeller. It gives a good robust method to determine the top speed of a displacement vessel. This condition is met when the vessel has a crest at the bow and stern, that is one wavelength on the waterline. This was deemed a physical limit for sailing ships as they lacked the power (no engines) to push through this increase in resistance that it caused - hence the term!
